SOS mother holding a baby in Children's Village Khajuri Kalan, India.
This is a moving story of a little boy called Jeevan, I don't want to say too much about it now, I will just let you read it and see the kinds of challenges and rewards involved in being an SOS mother:
At the age of five Jeevan has started locating things and follows simple instructions given by his SOS mother Bhagya. For mama Bhagya this is a big achievement. After he lost his parents Jeevan was growing up in a child adoption agency. At the age of three he was diagnosed as a child with special needs, it was then that the little boy was taken into the SOS Children's Village Khajuri Kalan (the village is for children with special needs).
"Jeevan was malnourished and his eyes were severely affected. When I put the child on my lap I realised that he had partial neck control and could not sit or stand on his own," mama Bhagya recalls. "He was unable to chew his food and I had to put him on a semisolid diet. The boy hardly showed any response to adults around him and preferred to be left alone," she added.
A regular medical check-up revealed that Jeevan had lost his eye sight but his cornea was not completely damaged. There was a possibility that he could get back his vision. Immediately he was taken to an eminent eye surgeon who after his examination gave a glimmer of hope that the vision could be restored in one eye. The doctor referred the child to a famous eye hospital in Hyderabad.
After hearing this mama Bhagya wanted to rush to Hyderabad for treatment. Without delay she took him to Dr. Murthy who took a keen and personal interest in Jeevan. A thorough check-up revealed that the vision in his left eye could be restored after an operation.
Finally Jeevan recieved the operation by Dr. Murthy in Hyderabad. When the team of doctors declared that the operation is a success Bhagya's joy knew no bounds.
Mama Bhagya did everything she could to ensure Jeevan's recovery. She would sit with him for hours and help him with the eye exercises the doctors prescribed.
After a month the mother took Jeevan to Hyderabad again for a follow-up. The results were fabulous Jeevan had started locating things. Certainly it was Bhagya's efforts and spirit which had won.
At present Jeevan loves playing with his mother and is happiest in her company. He can follow simple instructions given by Bhagya. "Go get me a yellow car" and Jeevan walks towards it. And then Bhagya calls her son's name and the little one reaches forward to be held much to the joy of his mother.
In Hindi Jeevan means 'life' and Bhagya means 'luck'. Undoubtedly the mother has brought luck in her child's life and created this miracle.

Children taking a nap at the SOS Social Center Estelí, Nicaragua.
As usual, children had the main role in the celebrations because they participated in traditional games with their parents. Although the rain was threatening to ruin the celebration, it didn't fall until very late in the afternoon.
As other years, typical foods such as vigoron*, repocheta**, enchiladas, tacos and a cocoa drink were prepared. As a few food providers had donated goods to the center, a raffle was made.
Undoubtedly, the most entertaining part was clowns who came to host different recreational activities that all the children enjoyed. A cultural and artistic act was also held for and with the children and youths from the SOS Children's Village Managua and former SOS children.
The highlight of 23 June was the inauguration of the "El Paraíso de los niños" (Paradise of children) community center. José Antonio, older brother of two boys who will attend the center, assuming their father-figure, helped out to set up the tent that protected the guests from the sun. He had to let go of the cord for his spinning top to fix the tent's supports, but he did a good job.
In spite of the setbacks, including a problem with the sound system, the children and community enjoyed the activities and food that were offered.
*Vigoron is a dish made with boiled tapioca, pork, and cabbage salad. **Repocheta is a tortilla stuffed with cheese, where the cheese melts.
