The Social Center in Alsacia, Concepción, Chile flooded

I've been reading about the floods in Chile. After the initial danger from fast flowing water comes the hard work of piecing the country back together again. The emergency relief work that SOS Children's Villages did in Chile is thoughtful and impressive. This is what I found out:

Sanitary problems, the collapse of hills and the total inundation of streets. The site around the SOS Social Center Alsacia in Concepción is among the most affected areas in the region known as Bio-Bio.

The water from sewers that carry rubbish and dirt practically swallowed the whole main yard of the SOS Social Center Alsacia. In fact, almost half of the first floor of the center was flooded, especially the kitchen and the bodega.

Things were not so different for the hundreds of neighbors in the sector. Besides the physical affection, the neighbors were - and still are - afraid of the varied diseases their children and themselves are exposed to.

"It is still very cold and we worry about respiratory illnesses, infections [...] particularly because of the contaminated water that remains stagnant," related a neighbor.

In an emergency and due to the impossibility to go from place to place through the flooded streets, the social center was forced to stop its normal activities. As soon as the strong rains were over, though, the social center, in coordination with the municipality of the city of Concepción, arranged safe rooms of the center to save as provisional accommodations and made them available to the community. Bags of detergent and charcoal, chlorine, and especially hot food were distributed among the most affected neighbors.

I've been reading about the successful teachers conference at the "SOS Forum 2006". Even though this took place three years ago, it still shows the charities dedication to good teaching, and how valued an education is for the children in our care.

On 18 October 2006, the SOS School Asuncíon (Zeballos-cué) organized an interesting academic event that congregated many school faculties from the community of Asunción. The event was attended and enriched with the participation of recognized educational authorities.

The main objective of the event "Teachers at Forum 2006" was to share the recent and innovative teaching experiences carried out at SOS School Asunción. Different teachers of the program described their teaching procedures which incorporate the issue of family strengthening in the classroom.

"I think the workshops were all very good. I particularly liked the level of creativity and in-depth analysis of the teaching methodologies presented at the different workshops," said Laura, one of the teachers of SOS School Asunción.

The event was attended by Miriam Ginzo, National Coordinator of UNESCO-Paraguay, Ana Selva Rolon, General Director of Middle Education, Johana Walder, Attached Coordinator for Global Infancy, and Ms. Norma Lopez, General Director of Initial and Primary Education.

Finally, at the closing ceremony, Ms. Lopez gave a little speech in which she congratulated the teaching staff of SOS School Asunción for their excellent work and contribution to the education in Paraguay. After her speech, a dancing chorus from SOS  School performed a colorful and cheerful Polka as a way to close the event.
