This is the story of SOS family support in The Gambia and the Saidy family in The Gambia.

SOS family support started in July 2005 with the aim of helping 200 orphans and vulnerable children living in Western Gambia by the end of 2005. The aim was to support orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS living in very poor conditions.

The first job was to ensure that children had adequate food, clothes, medical support and some education.

The second job was to support families in caring for their children. Here, families were asked to think about their income and make long term plans. Then there was investiation into materials and training needed to get started on the long term plan.

Fainally the aim was to look at communities with a view to minimizing the number of orphaned and vulnerable children. Key members of the community and various families that had already been supported, met with SOS staff to talk about the situation. The aim of these meetings was to increase the awareness of child care issues such as hygiene, medical care and HIV/AIDS.
