I found out about awards to children for bravery. It was a very touching read. The stories of their bravery are well worth reading and rewarding. This is what I found out:

On 24th January of 2009 The SOS School in Faridabad was honoured to be paid a visit by the twenty winners of the National Bravery Award, which is awarded to children in India each year.

SOS Children's Villages India has been honoured to be involved in the awards since 1995.

All the award winners were invited to the SOS School at Faridabad where they were applauded for their bravery and each given several prizes.

The children and teachers at the SOS school learned how 17 year old Seema from Chhattisgarh, was awarded for her bravery after she suffered severe burns from saving several of her friends from a fire. Then how 14 year old Aashu Kanwar from Rajasthan protested against the marriage that was planned for her. Next, 15 year old Kritika told of how she managed to fend off the burglars who had entered her home. Finally the children heard how 16 year old Heena Kuraishi jumped into a river to save her classmates from drowning.

The National Bravery Award gets a lot of attention in India. It was first presented in 1957 by the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) to recognise and honour children who had performed outstanding deeds of bravery and self sacrifice and the Awards are now presented by the Prime Minister on the eve of Republic Day. The children then take part in the majestic Republic Day parade in New Delhi, which is covered live on television and watched by millions every year.

Congratulating the children, S. Sandilya, President of SOS Children's Villages India said, "These children at their young age have demonstrated courage and compassion in their selfless gestures to fellow human beings. They are indeed great role models and are a source of inspiration for thousands of children. I am sure they will ignite the spirits of children of SOS Children's Villages of India across the country."

On the 24th of January 2009 SOS Children's Village Phuket was opened. It is one of the six villages that were built in the region after the tsunami disaster. Phuket is often remembered as the place where the most tourists lost their lives in the tidal wave. Many inhabitants of the coastal region were seriously affected by the disaster. Here is a little background on the new village and the area:

The SOS Children's Village in Phuket bears witness to the great international solidarity that was shown towards tsunami victims from both Thailand and abroad on 26 December 2004.

In the presence of many guests from Thailand and abroad, the president of SOS Children's Villages Thailand, Norawat Charoen-Rajapark, expressed his thanks for the financial and emotional support that had been given.

So far, 47 children have been taken into SOS Children's Village Phuket, which will be fully occupied at the end of the year, with 120 children. The SOS nursery is teaching 50 children, some of whom come from the neighbourhood.

In addition to the project in Thailand, new SOS Children's Villages were set up in India (Nagapattinam, Puducherry) and in Indonesia (Meulaboh, Banda Aceh, Medan), as were a number of other social facilities that are mainly aimed at families in need.

Around 23,000 people received direct support in the form of different types of SOS emergency relief, and over 2,200 houses, multi-purpose centres and two schools have been built.
