A portrait of a woman at SOS Social Center Guatemala City.
When the community centre "Rayito de Luz" opened its doors in May 2006, Amparo was one of the mothers selected by the family committee to participate as a community mother. This is her story:
Amparo was glad to attend the courses that the SOS family support put on for community mothers; every day she learned something new to put into practice with the children. "I wasn't scared, I just wanted to keep learning."The mothers of children in the community know that these women, who they entrust their children to every day, receive constant training and show vocation for their work.
The programme of SOS Social Centre Mixco, with a capacity for 530 children, comprises support in the areas of child, women's, family and community development to ensure a holistic and sustainable approach towards family support. The families participating are organised into family committees that run community homes and childminding centres in community spaces. These community homes and centres are organised according to a community-based self-organisation and self-management approach with SOS Children's Villages providing training and capacity building.

Flowers from SOS Children's Village Pushkin St.Petersburg, Russia.
This is how a village birthday is celebrated. On April 7th, 2007 the SOS Children's Village Pushkin was seven years old. But as the weather in St.Petersburg is usually bad in April a decision was made to celebrate the birthday itself on May 16. And on April 13 everybody in Children's Village took part in 'subbotnik' for spring cleaning after the winter.
On the birthday itself the Children's Village received its numerous guests and friends. During the festivity the Friendship Tree was planted, then there were tea parties in the family houses and in the evening everybody ate delicious cereal cooked on the bonfire.
