Here is a bit of background to the SOS Children's Village Bahir Dar.

The SOS Children's Village Bahir Dar comprises 12 family houses, a village director's house, an administrative building, an SOS aunts' house (SOS Children's Village mothers in training, who assist present SOS mothers in everyday jobs, and substitute them in case of illness or holidays), a guest house, a bakery, a multi purpose hall, and a small shop.

Approximately 100 children from the SOS Children's Village and its vicinity are taken care of at the adjacent SOS nursery, consisting of four classes, a kitchen, adjoining rooms and a playground.

The SOS Primary and Secondary School was opened in autumn 2003. Over 420 pupils are taught in 12 different classes, in a school equipped with a workshop, a library, a sports ground, and administrative units.

Despite the scarcity of capital available to the SOS Children's Village in Bahir Dar, it is always engaged in spreading its positive influence beyond its doors into the neighborhood. Those children from the neighborhood which are most in need are selected by a committee, entitling them to material aid such as shoes, clothing, and stationery items for school. Public schools unable to operate due to a lack of equipment are directly assisted with items such as blackboards.

This is a story about a young mother of three who has been given support by SOS to make a secure and happy life for her family in Assomada.

A 34-year-old mother of three lives in Assomada, in a small house. The mother could hardly cope with providing the essentials for her twelve and five-year-old girls and eleven -year-old boy.

However, since the family received support from SOS Children's Villages Cape Verde, she is now her own employer and has regained confidence.

The mother's name is Linete. She was struggling and had no real job. As she was left to raise her three kids, when the father of the children left and didn't contributed to any expenses.

SOS Children offered an interest free loan of 20,000 escudos (about USD 220) to Linete to start her own business. She used the loan to set up a stall selling fruits and vegetables in the market. The business is growing, she is now able to buy food in bulk, which is much cheaper.

Linete will start reimbursing the loan in March, and plans to be done by July. "As I know I have to reimburse the loan, I only spend a bit of the profit I make and save the rest for the future!", explains Linete.

In addition to this loan support, SOS Children in Assomada also paid for the school fees of her three children. Her youngest girl is attending the SOS nursery in Assomada, while the two older ones are in primary school nearby. To get started, her family also received a first necessity package, including rice, sugar, powder milk, beans and soap, among other things.

Linete's three children are part of the first set of children to receive support from the SOS children of Assomada.
