At the SOS Social Centre Estelí Este there is a 'mother scholarship programme'. It has been running since 2005, and aims to empower mothers from the communities and prevent child abandonment. Women who take part in the programme work at the social centre for six hours a day, taking care of children. For giving such care the mothers are paid a small remuneration and learn many different aspects of child care. They are also self-esteem seminars and various other courses on offer to make the learning complete.
