The beautiful town of Huehuetoca is an important historical site. It is located in a fertile region approximately 50 km north from Mexico City, Federal State of México.
SOS Children's Village Huehuetoca was set up after a terrible earthquake hit the whole region in 1985. This catastrophe caused many children to lose their parents, and many others have been abandoned as a result of difficult social situations.
The SOS Children's Village was built in an area of about 35,000 sq. m. It consists of twelve family houses, a room for support classes, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall with a library and an administration and service area. There is also a counseling room for a psychologist.
The SOS Children's Village has the capacity to become a new home for up to 108 children. It has been in operation since 1988; the opening took place in July 1989. SOS Children's Village Huehuetoca also has an SOS Youth Facility, where young people gradually prepare for independent life. Children from the SOS Children's Village attend the schools and nursery of the surrounding area.

In June 1992 a state of war was declared in Sarajevo. How did this effect the young people at the time? Let's start a young man we sahll call Dzevo, who got his first job in 1992.
"At first we ignored the war" says Dzevo, "I think it was good three months before we became aware there was war outside. Then once it became official on the 2nd June we stepped out of our denial."
A young girl, who we shall call Sara, recollects her dad walking back from work when, suddenly, he heard the sound of a falling grenade. He just started to duck when he realized it was neighbourhood children imitating the sound. They learned how to whistle it. Sara says that "To avoid embarrassment, my dad pretended his shoe lace was loose and began fastening it."
Sara and Dzevo lived in Sarajevo during the war along with thousands of other inhabitants who stayed in the city under siege.
